Course Description

The Community, Mental Health and Psychiatry – Level 4 Course is designed for anyone with an interest in Mental Health, particularly those who wish to become counsellors, therapists, social workers or find employment in other similar roles.

The course covers the main conditions many people currently receiving counselling/psychiatric treatment are diagnosed with, including their causes, symptoms, the diagnostic criteria used by health professionals and the treatment approaches designed for these conditions.

The home study Health Care courses also provide students with an understanding of the Mental Health system, the wide range of roles within it and important legislation in place relating to Mental Health, such as the Mental Capacity Act. Such legislation is clearly explained in easily understandable terms. Students are further provided with guidelines on the standards they should aim to achieve when working with clients, in particular ensuring that they understand the importance of listening to their clients and validating their feelings. The course encourages students to form their own opinions using factual evidence to support their answers.

On successful completion of this course students will receive an endorsed Level 4 Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards.

Prerequisites

As this is a Level 4 course, we will expect applicants to have evidence of successful study or relevant experience at Level 3 or equivalent. A good level of literacy is also a requirement if the extended assignment work is to be completed successfully.

Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Body.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.

Assessment

You will be assessed on TMAs (Tutor Marked Assignments). Most TMAs consists of short paragraph answers, although some TMAs may have a specific word count. The main criteria to pass as assignment is to prove to the tutor that you have fully understood the question and have answered it sufficiently.

If the assignment is not of the required level or needs an amendment it will be detailed in your tutor feedback so you can make any required changes. The course tutor will be happy to give guidance as to how you might improve you answers. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.
