Course Description

The Counselling & Managing Personal Debt – Level 2 Course is designed for people who work in or intend to work in the field of personal debt counselling or wish to provide advice and guidance on solving debt problems or wish to manage their own personal finance situation more effectively.

On completion of this course students will have gained:

  • An overview of debt counselling
  • An awareness of the personal attributes required in debt counselling
  • An appreciation the communication skills required in debt counselling
  • An understanding of the debt resolution process
  • A grasp of the issues involved in dealing with creditors

On successful completion of this course students will receive an endorsed Level 2 Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards.

The Counselling & Managing Personal Debt – Level 2 Course Includes the Following Units:
The following topics are covered: Causes of debt (Individual Circumstances, Economic Reasons and Other Causes of Debt); Types of borrowing; Creditor’s rights (Non-Court Actions and Court Actions); Office of Fair Trading debt collection guidance; and how long can a creditor pursue a debt for?
The following topics are covered: What is counselling?; The role of the counsellor; Values of counselling; Personal qualities; Communication skills; The counselling process (The physical environment and The five stages of counselling); and Personal development.
The following topics are covered: Analysing current financial circumstances; Contacting all creditors; Deciding priorities; and Preparing a financial statement.
The following topics are covered: Maximising income; and Reviewing expenditure.
The following topics are covered: Negotiating with priority creditors (Dealing with arrears in: Mortgages; Rent; Council Tax; Maintenance/Child support and Income Tax); Negotiating with secondary creditors (Dealing direct with creditors; Loan Consolidation; Debt Management Companies; Administration Orders and Individual Voluntary Arrangements – IVAs); Options available to those with no surplus money to pay creditors (Asking for debts to be written off; Debt Relief Order and Bankruptcy); and Conclusions.

There are no particular entry requirements for this course, so students can sign up providing they are comfortable studying at a Level 2 standard.

Course Duration & Online Support

You can start this course at any time, and you would be registered for a one-year period. You also have access to a personal tutor who can be contacted by email. Your tutor is available to assist with any queries and to mark your assignments for the Awarding Body.

As the course is self-study, you can complete it as quickly as you like. Support extensions are available if students do not complete the course within the one-year period.


You will be assessed on TMAs (Tutor Marked Assignments). Most TMAs consists of short paragraph answers, although some TMAs may have a specific word count. The main criteria to pass as assignment is to prove to the tutor that you have fully understood the question and have answered it sufficiently.

If the assignment is not of the required level or needs an amendment it will be detailed in your tutor feedback so you can make any required changes. The course tutor will be happy to give guidance as to how you might improve you answers. Your work can be sent back to your course tutor by email or by post.
